This morning, I got out of bed, turned the light next to my bed on, and went on to perform my daily morning routine. I walked into the hallway and turned the secondary lights(*) on, but only one of the two bulbs came on. Figuring the other must be broken, I went to turn the light in the computer room on, but it wouldn't turn on at all. Then I realized I didn't hear the usual hum of my computer either.

I opened the hallway closet to check on the fuses, but the closet was completely pitch black, I couldn't see anything at all. The light there refused to turn on as well. I went to turn the main light of the hallway on, but that refused duty as well, and as I was meddling with the switches, the single functioning bulb of the secondary lights sputtered and failed.

However, to my surprise (and somewhat relief), it was not dark in the hallway at all. The light in my bedroom was still on, and light also filtered in through the curtains of the kitchen and the computer room. Then I remembered I keep a flashlight next to the printer in the computer room. I went to fetch it, and it turned on just fine. I found the light from the LEDs to be cold, but quite reassuring.

Returning to the hallway to check on the fuses, I noticed the sky turning from black to blue in the skylight overhead, signalling dawn. And then, realization sunk in. My apartment is on the ground floor with two others on top of it, and it doesn't have a skylight!

At that point I realized I must be dreaming, and did the classic test of pinching myself. I wasn't surprised when it didn't hurt at all, and then my vision got all blurry and I woke up in my bed, for real this time. :-)

(*) Through some anomaly introduced by a previous owner, my hallway has two separate sets of light, the main lights on the ceiling, and the secondary lights on the wall. The main lights can only be switched on with a switch near the living, while the secondary ones can be turned on with two switches, one near the living and the other near the bedroom. So it's usually the secondary set that I switch on first.
