That depends on whom you ask! Moris considers himself the scourge of SPEWS, mostly everyone else considers him a troll, a kook, a crettin or any combination of those three. If they consider him at all, that is, since he is also the most widely killfiled individual in NANAE.
Moris is believed to be an individual named Moris Ciprut who lives in Edinburg, Scotland (that's the northern part of the United Kingdom, for those who don't know).
His first post on NANAE already contained a nazi reference or "Godwin" and things went downhill from there until Moris became one of the most annoying and least wanted posters on NANAE. And though he is already in a very deep hole, he keeps digging frantically up till today.
There is some circumstantial evidence that Moris may be posting to spammer forums under the name Euros, but this author has yet to see anything which proves this allegation beyond reasonable doubt.
Moris has, for unclear reasons, a pineapple up his arse about the SPEWS blocklist. His stated purpose is to bring about the end of SPEWS, and his first step is to bring about the end of NANAE, which he considers a creation of SPEWS supporters. (Never mind that NANAE predated SPEWS by several years; facts and logic have no place in Moris' alleged mind.)
His usual modus operandi is to tag on to a thread where someone asks to be delisted from SPEWS and spread lies and fud about SPEWS. Moris has on many occasions claimed that SPEWS is illegal, criminal and/or a fraud, or stated that listees are never delisted. None of these claims match with the available evidence.
He also frequently follows up to someone he considers a SPEWS supporter (whether the current thread is about SPEWS or not) and attack them ad hominem. These posts are often laced with insults and sexual references, the latter especially so when he believes his opponent is a female.
Often, he snips all content of a followup, usually with some denigrating remark about the previous poster and inserts some boilerplate text about his opinion of SPEWS. At times he does this so frequently that the resulting posts are considered spam (excessive multiposting or EMP).
His latest antics are to threaten blocklist owners (especially SORBS) to stop supporting SPEWS, «or you will be stopped by legal means». The nature of said legal means is never revealed, although he claims it has nothing to do with a court case. The timescale also varies, from 7 months to 30 days.
Ever since spammer Dave Lindhard (E360insight) sued Spamhaus, Moris has been ranting and raving about Spamhaus and its owner Steve Linford as well.
Well, he used to be posting under that name, but he has gone through a couple of accounts and also occasionally morphs for the stated purpose of evading killfiles. Moris knows that many killfile him on sight. (And he doesn't like not getting attention.)
Anyway, if you see a post that attacks SPEWS or a supposed SPEWS supporter in a highly insulting and slightly illogical way, chances are that you are dealing with a Moris morph. If the post makes claims like SPEWS being illegal, or listees never getting delisted, it's definitely Moris.
Lately, Moris has been claiming that "SPEWS is dead" and that both NANAE and other blocklists will soon follow. He has also attempted something of a flood by recycling and reposting his old messages (sometimes editted, sometimes not).
Nothing. Let him rant and rave away, and killfile him when he gets too annoying. Moris thrives on people giving him attention, and being ignored makes him go nuts. Only when someone seems to believe what he writes should you point out that Moris is a kook. This rarely happens anyway.
SORBS is another blacklist whose criteria for listing and delisting Moris does not like, and he occasionally lashes out at it, especially when one of the maintainers posts to NANAE.
Lately, Moris has been threatening SORBS' owner Matthew with an unspecified legal action, should Matthew not stop supporting SPEWS.
The Abusive Hosts BlockList is yet another blacklist that Moris doesn't like. It probably has something to do with one of his providers getting listed for allowing him to abuse Usenet.
Ah, Moris is a bit schizophrenic here. Sometimes he praises Spamhaus and its owner Steve for being a "responsible blacklist" and disagreeing with SPEWS. At other times he raves about how one of their lists, the XBL, is stolen from the CBL. And he is especially prone to attacking Susan, one of its maintainers.
Moris has been especially vicious towards Spamhaus and its owner Steve lately, after some spammer sued Spamhaus in Illinois and obtained a default judgement after lying to the judge.
Fairly simple, some of the posters on alt.usenet.kooks saw that he is a kook and treated him accordingly. In return, Moris threated to destroy AUK in sixteen days. Those have passed without anyone noticing anything unusual, and AUK is still there.
He noticed that some NANAE regulars are posting to alt.spam as well and is simply trolling them there too. He has declared alt.spam "dead" but keeps posting anyway.
Very simple, it's a moderated group and the moderators won't let him post his abusive messages there. Actually there is nothing in the charter of news.admin.net-abuse.blocklisting that prevents him from posting his lies, the moderators are only there to ensure a certain level of civility. But Moris seems completely unable to make a point without using insults at some point.
Unknown, but he tends to be very vicious when responding to posters whom he believes to be females, often referring to them as lesbians, nazi feminists, male haters, or other often sexually tinged remarks.
Just another way he seeks attention. His lists are somewhat random as people appear and disappear from them for seemingly no reason. Sometimes people he has declared "long-time SPEWS supporters", like this author, appear on the list as "new additions". Most likely they are merely lists of people who have recently pissed him off.
Common enemies. Brad has problems with some of the same people Moris has problems with, so they struck an unholy kook alliance. A few other kooks have briefly joined too.
Delusions of adequacy from Moris. NANAE is not moderated and has no central management. Moris has as about as much say over NANAE as Bill Gates has over what the next release of the Linux kernel will contain. Sorry, geek joke that. Moris has absolutely no say over NANAE, although he sure does try.
This author has occasionally referred to the kook alliance mentioned above as the NANAE Management, but it never caught on, probably because most regulars ignore Moris-related threads anyway.
Ah, a battle of the kooks! Jamie claimed to have caused Moris to lose his account on Entanet, which got a frothing response from Moris. He even crossed the B.I. with his repetitive postings, making him officially a Usenet spammer.
Not yet, but he was a nominee for the "Pathetic Anal Pineapple" of September 2005. It's probably only a matter of time.
Moris has been nominated for the Golden Killfile of November 2006. He got ten votes which placed him as #2. Better luck next time, Moris.
Technically, yes. He did for a time post a boilerplate response to SPEWS-related threats in such large amounts that it became Usenet spam.
His frequent morphing also shows that he deems his messages more important than the wishes of his audience not to see them, a mindset which is common among spammers.
Susan, a Spamhaus volunteer and well-respected NANAE regular believes that Moris is the poster Euros on spammer forums. Indeed, the posting styles are remarkably alike, but this author has yet to see any proof beyond that.
No actual email spam has ever been linked directly to Moris as far as this author knows.
