Made in Heaven

A fan-made mod for Baldur's Gate 1

This is a collection of tweaks and additions for Baldur's Gate 1 (also known as "The Original Saga") created by me, for no other purpose than my own personal enjoyment. Hopefully others will find it useful and fun as well.

Mod components

  1. Legion of Bone

This mod adds some extra encounters to the Undercity, which was in my humble opninion a bit boring for a final dungeon. Expect skeletal problems as soon as you enter, but if you survive you'll gain an item that will surely help you give Sarevok the butt-kicking for goodness he so richly deserves. ;-)

Then, if you feel like it, wander around a bit for some more bony trouble...

  2. Mix & Match

A very small mod that lets you freely combine magical armor, rings, amulets, cloaks etcetera...

Believe it or not, but the desire to see this created is what sparked my interest in modding in the first place. And in the end it turned out to be so small and very simple. The mod adds only one small file to override, an itemexcl.2da file of a few bytes. :-)

  3. Relative stat bonusses

This mod aims to get rid of potions, gauntlets, spells and what not that set one or more of a character's stats to fixed values, making them give a bonus relative to the characters current stats instead. Not all items and spells are covered yet, but I think I got the most important ones.

This mod makes the Gauntlets of Dexterity and -Ogre Power much less powerful, but makes many potions and spells quite a bit more useful. Strength of One now no longer reduces Minsc's strength... :-)

  4. Work in Progress As the name implies, this is work in progress. Currently this adds two items I intend to use in future additions to this mod. There is no way to get them in normal gameplay now.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is this mod called 'Made in Heaven'?
I have a facsination with celestials. Besides, I couldn't think of a better name at the time, and it has a nice ring to it.
What happened to the Boots of Butt-Kicking from the earlier versions?
You can now get them from one of the new encounters in Legion of Bone.
But that's so late in the game! Why!?
Well, the boots are very powerful, perhaps even too powerful. (I did borrow them from Munchkin, after all.) So I felt it would be best if you didn't get them until very late in the game.
You can still cheat of course. Their item code is still [MHBOBK].
Why bother with the Undercity at all?
I love going through final dungeons in role-playing games. Names like "Lunar Core", "Black Omen", "Kefka's Tower", "Northern Crater" and many others still bring fond memories back to me. Compared to those, this final area to Baldur's Gate felt rather bland, with nothing there but easily killable skeletons and zombies. So I decided to add a little spice.
A second reason was that my cleric character Layla was always a few thousand points of experience short of 9th level when I arrived in this area. Adding a bunch of Skeleton Warriors for her to fight was just enough for her and Imoen to gain another level.
Okay, so where are the new encounters in the Undercity?
SPOILERS: Exoect to be confronted by a Death Knight and two Skeleton Warriors soon after entering. You'll find additional Skeleton Warriors to beat up in the ruined buildings at the western side of the map. The Skeleton Warriors to the east of the Bhaal Temple were already there. :-)
Shouldn't a Death Knight use spells?
Maybe. I'll see about that in a future version of this mod.

Compatibility

This mod is installed with WeiDU version 1.99 and should be compatible with all other WeiDU mods. The mod was written for the original release of Baldur's Gate (the one on five CDs) but should also work with The Original Saga.

It was tested on Baldur's Gate with Tales of the Sword Coast installed, patched to the latest level, and with the BG1 Fix Pack and Game Text Updates installed, as well and the following mods: Unfinished Business v4, Ease of Use v2.1, Item Upgrade (Com Forge) v1.01 and Slime Quest.
